| The Seed of Curiosity My paternal grandmother, affectionately known as mama Cuca, planted the seed of adventure and curiosity in 1969 when, during one of my many visits, she said “you must have gotten your height from your uncles in Zacatecas. They were known as ‘los largos’- the tall ones.” That was the only time I ever heard that our family came from Zacatecas. The curiosity was renewed when, on his dying bed, my dad told stories about his life. But he had no stories about his father. Maybe he didn’t want to talk about him, maybe he didn’t know any more than his name. My father grew up as a Medina my grandmother's maiden name, but changed it to Delgado just before he married my mother. In 1939 my grandmother told him about the circumstances of his birth, that his surname was Delgado not Medina, and showed him his birth certificate. That’s when he first knew anything about his father. The story, told by my mother, is that he was very upset with my grandmother. When told that he was conceived out of wedlock, he wished he had never found this out. Still, he changed his name. My father must have felt an obligation to carry on his father’s name. He must have wanted the family tie. So I decided that one day I would go to Zacatecas and find out who his father was. Several years later it was time to plan my vacation, but as my family knows I’m not one to lay around a pool and relax. Anyone who has ever traveled with me can tell you that I try to see and experience everything I can squeeze into everyday. In 2000 I went to Cuba. After that I had to come up with something more unusual. So what could be more unusual and exciting than going to Mexico and finding the stories my father could have told us about his father. |
