| In January 1970, John Gamboa came in to see me about some ASUC money that would be available if we could get a proposal submitted that week. I had already been thinking about expanding on the idea of the Summer Urban Camp. I quickly wrote a proposal called the “Padrino Project.” The idea was to connect Chicano families with university students who would as act as facilitators and mentors. By the end of the year we had more than 30 student volunteeers, mostly residents of Casa Joaquin Murrieta, working with as many families, in Oakland, Richmond, Hayward and Union City.
