2002. Mt Signal looms mysteriously over Calexico and Mexicali, rising 2300 feet from the valley floor. From some angles it seems daunting, from others it seems easily accessable. It's a beautiful backdrop to the green argicultural fields on the US side of the border. The All American Canal ends at its base where pumping stations carry water all the way to Tijuana. The first picture shows Roger, Mindy and Don crossing the international border into Mexico, illegally. Kimberly and I drove around from the Mexican side. In many places there really is no trail at all but there are blue arrows pointing the way up. Some places are clearly dangerous, other places we had to climb on hands and knees. Roger likes to stay ahead of the group then wait for us to catch up. At the radio towers we looked across the gulley to the next peak wondering if that was actually the top. We convinced ourselves it wasn't. Besides, it was after 2 pm and we had to start back down. People in the Imperial Valley consider Mt. Signal theirs but it's actually in Mexico and is named "El Centinella." The hike was very difficult for most of us. It took me all week to recuperate. |
